The Day of Atonement is one of the most important rituals described in the Law of Moses (Leviticus 23:26-32). Episode 4 of House of David Season 2 ("Road to Atonement") gives us a concrete picture of what it was like for ancient Israelites to participate in this important ritual and the deep emotional and social significance it would have had, even among less devoted Israelites.

In Episode 4 of The Promised Land we see the aftermath of Aaron’s disastrous decision to create a Golden Calf (Exodus 32), the transformation of Moses into a shining figure (Exodus 34:29-35), and the collection of an offering, and the call of Oholiab and Bezalel to construct the Tabernacle (Exodus 25:1-9, Exodus 31:1-11, Exodus 36:1-7).

David once lamented how, “Everyone utters lies to his neighbor; with flattering lips and a double heart they speak.” (Psalm 12:2, ESV). In Episode 3 of House of David Season 2, we start to see where his bleak view of humanity comes from. Below I’ll give a brief summary of the episode and evaluate it as a Bible adaptation and a comedy.

After the action-packed opening to House of David Season 2, Episode 2 slows things down a bit in order to hammer home the cost of Israel’s victory and the ramifications it will have for David, the House of Saul, and other key figures. If you’re following along in Scripture, Season 2 Episode 2 is basically covering the start of David’s ascent through the Israelite military (1 Samuel 18:5) as well as the resulting drama in the House of Saul.

Episode 1 of House of David Season 2 picks up right where Episode 8 of Season 1 left off, with David’s triumph over Goliath and the ensuing battle between the Israelites and Philistines, followed by David's reunion with King Saul and Jonathan after the battle (1 Samuel 17:51-18:4). While maintaining a skillful balance between humor and biblical fidelity, Episode 2 “Sinai” picks up in Exodus 19 with Israel’s arrival at Mount Sinai, the people consecrating themselves for their upcoming encounter with God, God’s arrival in a thick cloud, and Moses’ first ascent up Mount Sinai. Below I’ll give a brief summary of the episode and evaluate it as both a Bible adaptation and a comedy.
