House of David Season 2 Episode 1 Bible Study & Discussion Guide

During our discussion of biblical media in 2025, The Bible Artist podcast team hailed Season 2 of House of David as the best biblical adaptation of the year. In my episode by episode reviews and analysis, I was consistently impressed by the way Season 2 brought a sense of thematic and moral complexity to its portrayal of the biblical characters, elaborating on the original source material in ways that mirrored or foreshadowed other biblical events and stories. Now that it's more widely available on Prime Video, I've been working on episode by episode Bible study and discussion guides for House of David Season 2 for my monthly/annual supporters on Buy Me a Coffee, but I'd like to share my Bible study and discussion guide for Season 2 Episode 1 for anyone who is considering membership and interested in checking them out.

Below is a set of Bible study and discussion questions from my guide for House of David Season 2 Episode 1 ("A Tale of Two Swords"). This episode depicts the events of 1 Samuel 17:51-18:1, beginning just after the death of Goliath and focusing on the ensuing battle between the Israelites and Philistines, and concluding with Saul and Jonathan honoring David for his victory. Like many episodes of House of David, "A Tale of Two Swords" draws on other biblical stories and events to amplify the rather brief account that we get of the battle in the Book of Samuel. One of the key sources informing Episode 1's depiction of Samuel's role in the battle is Exodus 17:8-16. Because this is such an interesting story and adds an additional layer of significance to the events of the episode, I've chosen to make this the focus of the Bible study portion of this guide.

Before Viewing House of David Season 2 Episode 1: Bible Study & Discussion Questions

Before watching Episode 1, it helps to take a moment to offer your group members a brief explanation/reminder of what House of David is and to prime them to understand and reflect on its key biblical and theological insights.

Introduction: What is House of David?

House of David is a multi-season streaming series, loosely adapting the story of Saul and David,

originally told in 1 Samuel 15 – 2 Samuel 24. While the core characters and major events are drawn

from the original biblical story, the show also includes many fictional characters and events as well as

details drawn from later Jewish legends.

Bible Study: THE LORD is My Banner

What decides the outcome of a battle? Today, most historians focus on strategy, tactics, logistics, geography, and other material and social conditions. But people in the ancient world recognized that behind every earthly battle between human armies was a heavenly battle between spiritual armies. In Israel’s very first battle against a band of Amalekite raiders, God used Moses and his staff as an object lesson in order to show his people what matters most to the outcome of a battle.

Discuss:

  • Why does God make the Israelites fight instead of defending them singlehandedly?

  • Why do the Israelites prevail when Moses holds his staff up, while the Amalekites prevail when he lowers it? Does God’s power depend on the position of the staff?

  • What are some areas of life in which Christians need to remember that our success ultimately depends on trusting the Lord? How can we seek the Lord’s aid?

  • What does the story show us about the needs and limitations of our leaders? Who are the people that you support and by whom you are supported?

After Viewing House of David Season 2 Episode 1: Discussion Questions

After watching the episode, I think it helps to have a more general, open-ended discussion. While I've provided a handful of questions, don't feel like you need to finish all of them. If one question sparks a fruitful conversation, I would stick with that, even if it means you don't get to some of the later questions.

Discuss:

  • What stuck out to you about the show? What could you connect with personally?

  • Did you have any questions about what happened? Was anything confusing?

  • Which characters reflected the truths we discussed earlier? Which characters did not?

  • What’s your biggest takeaway from today’s discussion?
