Sneak Peeks at The Chosen Season 6, Joseph of Egypt, and More

Updated: 23 hours ago

In a recent livestream, Dallas Jenkins shared sneak peeks from several new 5&2 Studios projects, including a scene from The Chosen Season 6, behind-the-scenes images from Joseph of Egypt (the first live-action spinoff of The Chosen), a scene from The Chosen Adventures, and a scene from the upcoming animated David film, which was recently acquired by 5&2 Studios. Below I'll summarize some of the key updates on The Chosen franchise and some insights from the new images (I'll also be discussing them live Monday night on YouTube for anyone who wants to join). But be warned: minor SPOILERS ahead.

The Chosen Season 6: Behind-the-Scenes Images

In earlier updates, Dallas had already made known that the first six episodes of The Chosen Season 6 will be released in Fall 2026, while the final two episodes would be released in theaters in Spring 2027. Season 6 has been filming throughout the summer and during the livestream, Dallas shared a plethora of images that hint at what's ahead.

The Arrest of Jesus in The Chosen Season 6

Several of the images show us Jesus being arrested and brought for judgment, first to Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin and then to Pilate himself.

Jesus' Disciples on the Run in The Chosen Season 6

The Gospels don't tell us about what most of the disciples are up to while Jesus is being arrested and tried, but some of the images from The Chosen Season 6 show us the disciples evading arrest.

The Crucifixion in The Chosen Season 6

Of course, the main event of The Chosen Season 6 is the crucifixion of Jesus on Golgotha. We got several images involving crucifixion, but attentive viewers will notice that there appear to be two distinct crucifixion events. One fits the biblical description of Jesus' death at Golgotha beside two criminals (I suspect the fourth cross is for shooting other takes). The other contains at least seven crosses and is most likely a flashback to an earlier crucifixion.

The Chosen Season 6 Scene: John, Malchus, and... Judas?

The Chosen Season 5 introduced us to Malchus, a servant of High Priest Caiaphas who John was able to befriend while helping Zebedee deliver anointing oil. This helps explain how John ("the other disciple") is known to the High Priest and able to get Peter and himself into the High Priest's outer courtyard (John 18:15-16).

The scene released during the livestream takes place after John has entered and is trying to get Malchus to help Jesus. Given how Jesus just reattached his ear, which Peter severed during the arrest (John 18:10, Luke 22:51), Malchus is sympathetic and hopes that Jesus can use that same power to deliver himself, but he is unable to offer concrete help.

As the two are talking, John is seen by Judas who appears behind some bars (a strikingly symbolic visual) and tries to explain his logic to John. As we saw in Season 5, Judas believes that by having Jesus arrested he will either force him to deliver himself or expose him as a fraud. John berates Judas for trusting in his own understanding instead of having faith in Jesus, but Judas insists that he is waiting on details like the rest of them - he doesn't know when or how Jesus will choose to reveal his power and defeat his enemies (an ironic statement - the revelation of Jesus' power comes through his crucifixion). Their conversation is cut short, as John asks Malchus to take Judas away before he is seen by Simon Peter, who we see waiting by the charcoal fire.

The Chosen Season 6: The Story of Sin & Redemption

There's one other detail that Dallas mentioned about Season 6 of The Chosen that stuck out to me. A lot of fans have wondered how the events of Jesus' arrest and crucifixion could be stretched out into an entire season of television. I have my own ideas about how The Chosen Season 6 could play out, but what Dallas said makes me think that the show is going to take another direction. In describing the season, he alluded to how it would tell not just the story of Jesus' death on the cross but the story of humanity that made his death necessary.

To me, that suggests that we will be getting several Old Testament flashbacks, perhaps even the story of Adam and Eve receiving their commission as God's image bearers (Genesis 2) only to listen to Satan's lies and violate God's prohibition against eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of God and evil, leading to their expulsion from Paradise and the first promise of the Messiah (Genesis 3). Alternatively, we might see these events and the idea of the Fall discussed during a flashback to the temptation of Jesus by Satan (Matthew 4:1-11). Or, given that this is The Chosen, we may get a less cosmic approach: personal flashbacks highlighting how various characters in the show are struggling with sin and are in need of redemption. Regardless, I'm interested to see how The Chosen Season 6 explores the need of humanity for redemption.

Joseph of Egypt: The Chosen's 1st Live-Action Spin-Off

Joseph of Egypt, the first Amazon-sponsored live-action spin-off of The Chosen just recently began filming and announced its cast. As a result, no scenes of the new show were available yet, but Dallas was able to share a few behind-the-scenes shots that give us our first look at Egyptian sets as well as Jacob's family. It was also interesting to learn that the set designer for the show was involved in other famous Egypt-related films like The Mummy and Stargate.

The Chosen Adventures Date & Sneak Peek

We have known thatThe Chosen Adventures, an animated spinoff aimed at younger viewers, would come out sometime in 2025, but Dallas finally announced the official release date: October 17. I don't think the scene shared was new - it was an animated version of the meeting between Joshua and Jesus in The Chosen Season 1 Episode 3, which I'm pretty sure we have seen in a previous livestream. Nevertheless, the show is looking great and I'll be excited to start watching with my young children later this Fall.

The Animated David Movie

David, an animated musical following the rise of King David, was in development with Angel Studios for several years. Earlier this year, Slingshot Studios, the producer of the film, sued Angel Studios for coopting the film for its own interests and was able to dissolve the relationship between the two companies. Slingshot then decided to partner with 5&2 Studios to finish David and find a distributor. Dallas didn't offer a firm release date for David. It was originally supposed to premiere this Fall, but it wouldn't surprise me if the legal issues and other changes will push its release back until 2026.

In the brief clip from David, we see the eponymous hero collect a smooth stone from a stream as he calmly makes his way through the wilderness, before arriving at the massive and impressive Israelite camp in the Valley of Elah, where he will ultimately face the giant, Goliath.

The Golden Age of Bible Adaptation Begins

Since The Chosen began receiving significant coverage in the mainstream news, I've been anticipating an explosion of new Bible shows and films. We now seem to be entering into that new Golden Era for Bible adaptation. Although not all the Bible adaptations that have followed The Chosen have achieved the same level of artistic and commercial success, it's amazing to see updates on so many new projects from 5&2 Studios - and that's not even counting the images from House of David Season 2 and the trailer from Nic Cage's new Bible horror, The Carpenter's Son, which were also released earlier this weekend. Victor and I will be discussing all of this news on YouTube, so please join us live or leave your thoughts below and let me know which new Bible show/film you are most excited for.
