A new trailer just dropped for House of David Season 2, which premieres on October 5 on the Wonder Project subscription service on Amazon Prime. Season 2 will pick up with the aftermath of David's defeat of Goliath and follow David's ascent to commander of the Israelite army, his friendship with Jonathan, and his doomed romance with Mychal, all of which fuel Saul's violent envy and paranoia, eventually forcing David to go on the run as an outlaw. I recently received early reviewer-access to the first two episodes of Season 2, but I fortunately haven't viewed them yet, so below I can speculate freely about what lies ahead based solely on what we see in the trailer and what we know from Scripture.
House of David Season 2 Trailer Analysis
Below are some key shots from the House of David Season 2 trailer and my thoughts.
Where House of David Season 2 Begins: The Death of Goliath
The trailer begins with a shot of David standing over the slain body of Goliath, a reminder of where Season 1 left off and also the launching point for David's meteoric rise to fame and power in Season 2. In voice-over, David is told that what he just did will never be forgotten, a callback to the way that Season 1 framed his defeat of Goliath.

Drawing Goliath's gigantic sword, David prepares to face King Achish of the Philistines, who charges at him on horseback. We know that Achish will live to fight another day, and so David's fight with him will not be fatal, but it will help David win Achish's respect, paving the way for him to eventually become Achish's bodyguard.

David's Triumphant Return to Gibeah
After the battle, we witness a large procession of Israelite soldiers returning back to Gibeah, Saul's capital city.

Although King Saul rides at the head of the army, he is followed immediately by David and Jonathan. In the streets, we can see women playing tambourines, perhaps already singing of Saul killing thousands but David tens of thousands (1 Samuel 18:7). In a nice touch of retroactive typology, the victors are also greeted by palm branches, just as Jesus will be several hundred years later.

In voice-over, we hear Saul announce that David will join the House of Saul and we see him present David to the cheering crowd. So far, Saul's envy doesn't seem to have been tripped.

But how will David join the House of Saul? We get a quick shot of Saul's two daughters, Mirab and Mychal, a hint of the potential love triangle that will complicate David's inclusion in Saul's household. Although the show has established Mychal's love for David, it has hinted at Mirab's potential interest. In Scripture, Saul initially offers Mirab (1 Samuel 18:19).

In Scripture, Jonathan also pledges his love and loyalty to David soon after his victory (1 Samuel 18:1-5) and we get a hint of this moment as well.

Love Triangles & Palace Intrigue in House of David Season 2
But David's joyful triumph will soon be overtaken by intrigue. We get a shot of Adriel, the lead elder of the tribe of Judah, telling his son, Jordan, that David is an obstacle between him and the throne.
Season 1 established Adriel's ambition and a mutual romance between Jordan and Mirab that was ruined by Saul's madness. In Scripture, Adriel ultimately marries Mirab, after David turns down the opportunity. So how is all of that going to connect together? We get a few hints as the trailer continues.

We soon cut to a shot of Jordan warning a crying Mirab that if they do not act, they will lose everything. It looks like Jordan is suborning Mirab on behalf of his father and using her in a plot to keep David from the throne. Either they are pressuring Mirab not to marry David (because that will put him in line for the throne) or they are pressuring her to feign interest in marrying him as a part of some scheme.

Later on in the trailer, we get a shot of Mirab shooting an arrow, another hint that she may be participating in some sort of plot.

By contrast, we soon get a shot of David and Mychal (Mirab's sister) embracing, as Mychal assures David that he has her heart and always will. If David has been offered Mirab by Saul, he'll be in a bit of a bind. It looks like Mychal will assure David of her love regardless of whatever decision he makes in response.

David's Rise to Power in House of David Season 2
Our attention now turns to David's growing power and fame as a military commander. We get a shot of Jonathan telling David that the men would follow him into the fires of hell. As if to confirm that, we then see David leading an army into a hellscape.

David's growing popularity causes concern for Queen Ahinoam, who warns Saul that the men would crown David today if they could. It appears that she will be playing the devil on Saul's shoulder, drawing out his envy and fear of David.

Ahinoam's fears are not without merit. The trailer jumps ahead to a scene that I suspect may be the end of Season 2. David, holding the sword of Goliath that he receives back from the High Priest Ahimelech (1 Samuel 21), is surrounded by a ragtag band that look like his outlaws (1 Samuel 22:1).

Saul's Wrath in House of David Season 2
Ahimelech's decision to give David the sword of Goliath eventually brings Saul's violent wrath down on the priests of Nob, leading to a massacre (1 Samuel 22:6-23). We get a hint of that moment in the next scene, in which Saul insists to Ahimelech that he is God's chosen.

Reinforcing this sense of Saul's violent wrath, we get a shot of Saul arresting Samuel, insisting that "This is finished," to which Samuel replies, "No, it is just beginning." Samuel will most likely die by the end of Season 2 (1 Samuel 25:1).

The trailer then shifts into a montage of shots, one of which includes Samuel breaking his staff in the midst of flames, perhaps a further hint at his dark fate.

Growing Chaos in House of David Season 2
Jumping backward in time, we hear Ahinoam chiding Saul for bringing chaos into their home and warning that David is a threat. To hammer this point home, we get a shot of David returning back to Gibeah with the dowry he will pay to marry Mychal: two hundred Philistine foreskins (1 Samuel 18:20-29). David is throwing Saul some serious side-eye, which suggests that their relationship is already deteriorating.

We also get a shot of David hiding from a pursuer with a torch - most likely during his escape from Saul's court after Saul sends soldiers to kill him (1 Samuel 19:11-18).

Saul isn't the only one worried about David. As action scenes abound, Eliab warns that David is a danger to himself and his family. When Saul warns David that decisions have consequences, David points out that lies do as well.

Perhaps the most intriguing action shot is of Jonathan facing another giant, most likely one of Goliath's brothers who were introduced in Season 1.

Eshbaal feeds his father's fear, insisting that Saul has been deceived and that the traitor he seeks (David) has been in his house the whole time. Season 1 did a good job of explaining why Saul isn't already suspicious of David - primarily because he assumes David's bastard status disqualifies him. This revelation from Eshbaal will probably play a major role in turning Saul against David.

We then see the result of Ahinoam and Eshbaal's scaremongering: Saul, armed with a sword and spear, prepares to attack David and says, "No more deception, did Samuel choose you?" In response, David wisely points out, "No, God chose me." This is most likely Saul's attempt to kill David that causes David to flee into the wilderness (1 Samuel 19:8-10).

Key Insights into House of David Season 2
While most of the trailer reinforced my expectations for Season 2, there were a few key new bits of information that it provided me:
First of all, despite the quick turnaround, House of David Season 2 looks like it will be even more action-packed than Season 1, and the production value continues to look excellent.
I've been wondering how House of David would make use of Saul's initial offer of Mirab to David. I'm very intrigued by the hint that Adriel is also suspicious of David and that Mirab may be a pawn that he's using, through the influence of Jordan. If the show follows Scripture, her eventual marriage to Adriel appears to be an attempt to secure his ascendency to the throne.
I wasn't sure how much of David's time with the outlaws we would get this season, but it clearly looks like we'll get some. Still, I suspect that the shots of David and the outlaws come from the end of the season - there's a lot that needs to happen before we get there.
I wasn't sure how Saul would react to the anointing of Eshbaal at the end of last season. The fact that Eshbaal is in the palace suggests that Saul isn't as angry as I expected. But Eshbaal may still be in the dog house. Indeed, his accusation against David may be an attempt to win back Saul's favor and turn his father's suspicion away from himself.
Season 1 spent a lot of time setting up the giants, so I'm not surprised to see that they will continue to play a role in this season, even though the Bible doesn't mention them showing up again until David is on the throne.
