Those coming to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in search of a straightforward representation of Homer’s poem will leave disappointed. While the film is deeply and thoughtfully engaged with the source material and accurately captures more than I was expecting, it is equally shaped by the thematic interests of its auteur director.
